Cover Letter

Cover Letters

A covering letter is a letter that is part of your resume. While you may have a generic or standard letter, you need to personalize your letter for each job that you apply for. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself and your resume and pave the way for an interview.

While there are many different styles to writing a covering letter, the following framework is generally accepted as containing all the essential elements.

All covering letters will:

  1. Be typed
  2. No spelling or grammatical errors
  3. Be addressed to a specific person. If you are not sure who to write the letter to, call the business and ask.
  4. The first paragraph clearly explains why you are applying for a the job.
  5. The second paragraph explains why you want this job and why you are qualified for this job. Here you can highlight specific qualifications that make you a suitable person for the job
  6. In the third paragraph you thank the person for taking the time to consider your application and you request an interview. You should also include your contact information in this paragraph.
