Debating Vocabulary


Debate: a formal and organized argument about a resolution (the issue)

Resolution: a statement that clearly expresses one side of an issue (BIRT all students should wear school uniforms.) All resolutions start with BIRT - Be It Resolved That ..

Affirmative Team: the team which argues the pro or YES side of the resolution (students SHOULD wear school uniforms)

Negative Team: the team which argues the con or NO side of that resolution (students SHOULD NOT wear school uniforms)

Contentions: all points that support the argument, whether pro or con

Rebuttal: pointing out the faults of the arguments of the opposing team
