Computer Studies 10 - Webquest

Introduction - "The Why"

Learning Intention:

To understand hot topics within Computing that affect us, our world and the future.

Why this / Why now?

The idea of Computer Studies 10 is that it is an appetizer course for what you could do in Grade 11/12.

So you will be learning about an array of topics to 'whet your appetite' on what the field of Computing can hold for you.

Each of these topics is important to what is going on 'out there' in the world.

These topics are big, you won't be able to cover them all in detail. Focus in on something within it that interests you and do a good job with that.

Task - "The What"

Assignment

In this assignment you will be working in groups to:

  • Research a topic
  • Summarize it into key points
  • Present those points to your peers
    • Make your points clear
    • Show you have read and understood the material
    • Present your information so that it is:
      1. Easily understood by someone who did not choose that topic
      2. Detailed
  • Do an activity with them to test their learning & understanding
    • It should reflect what you said - don't test them on things you didn't present
    • It should be interesting

You will have 2.5 days to prepare your presentation. You will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present and assess your peers.

You will be assigned one of these topics:

Process - "The How"

Suggested Timeline:

  • Half a lesson: Planning
  • One lesson: Locating resources, taking notes, creating presentation
  • One lesson: Creating activity.

Some General Tips:

  • Don't go overboard. You have two and a half days.
  • These topics can be huge and dense. Focus on a part that interests you. E.g. If you're looking at mental / physical health maybe you want to focus on over use of social media, or gaming, or something else rather than trying to do it all.
  • Be interesting
  • Don't be afraid to let your personality through in your presentation. Passion is good.

Some Activity Ideas:

  • Quiz show - jeopardy, lightning round quiz
  • Worksheet - fill in the blanks, etc.
  • Group discussions
