Assignment ExpectationsMost extinctions that have occurred throughout Earth's long history have been a result of natural factors. However, recent evidence suggests that human-made factors may be the cause of many extinctions arising today.
Are we currently experiencing the 6th Mass Extinction?
At least Five times in Earth’s history 75% or more of all living species disappeared forever — and within a short period of time. These mass-extinction events marked the boundaries between different periods in geologic time. Those species losses caused a major shift in the planet’s ecology and biological evolution. Clues to these changes can be seen in the fossils and rock layers that form Earth's geologic record.
Your task today:
- Research the 6th extinction event
- Select a species from British Columbia that is At-Risk or Endangered and collect information about that species
Design a MISSING Poster for a species that is at-risk or endangered in North America
Criteria:
1. Species is At-Risk or Endangered
2. Species is from British Columbia
3. Can be hand-drawn or computer designed
4. “Missing” or “Wanted” at the top
5. At least 1 image on poster
6. Description including the following:
a. Traits of the species
b. Habitat
c. Predators
d. Reasons for being At-Risk or Endangered
7. In a box/bubble on the poster, include an argument for why you think we are in a 6th global extinction event
8. Include solutions for helping the species survive
9. Include any Indigenous cultural practices or
perspectives involving the animal
Example species you could choose (but you are not limited to choosing):
Northern Abalone, Blue Whale, Little Brown Myotis, Basking Shark, North Pacific Right Whale, Sei Whale, Sockeye Salmon, Marbeled Murrelet, American Black Swift, Spotted Owl, Vancouver Island Marmot, Western Toad, Ancient Murrelet, Stellar Sea Lion, Whitebark Pine, Northern Leopard Frog, Tiger Salamander, Caribou, Purple Martin
