Science 8: Indigenous Groups and Geography

Rationale

 

The purpose of this project is to explore the connection between geography of

Indigenous Peoples and its connection to identity, culture/religion and ways of life. 

Assignment

Procedure:

  • In groups of 2 or 3 choose a topic and confirm topic with Ms. King
  • Research topic
    • you have 2 full periods to answer guiding questions and print photos and text for the poster board. A 3rd period is available to assemble and finalize the poster
  • Posters must include:
    • A title
    • At least 3 topic related photos
    • text that answers the topic questions
    • Sources/Bibliography

Topic Choices:

  • Indigenous Peoples of Coastal British Columbia
  • Indigenous Peoples of Interior British Columbia
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Arctic 
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Subarctic 
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Northwest Coast
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Plateau
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Plains
  • Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Woodlands
  • The Navajo People (special focus on the 4 sacred mountains)

Topic Questions:

  • Where is the traditional territory of your group?
  • How does the geography impact your groups language and traditional practices? 
  • How does geography impact your group's identity?
  • How does geography impact your group's culture or religion?
  • How does geography impact your group's way of life? 
    • For example:
      • Food Sourcing
      • Travelling and Migration
      • Trading/Producing Goods
      • Language, etc.
