Medieval Guilds: Home

People who lived in towns in the Middle Ages were usually part of the merchant class and were more often than not wealthier than village dwellers. These craftsmen and business owners were independent men and women who did not work in service to anyone but themselves. Medieval Towns, Trade and Travel features daily life in a town, the artisans and business people who populated it, and what kind of transportation was available in the days of horse and cart.

Defines the Late Middle Ages, marked by the start in 1096 of the religious wars called the Crusades, and ending roughly in the mid-1400s, ushering in the next major era in European history, the Renaissance.

A Sense of History aims to recognise the relationship between the content of a history course and the skills developed through its study. For each of the core study units it provides a pupils' book which includes historical research and carefully chosen sources and a teacher's guide which gives advice on implementing the National Curriculum, teaching the programme of study and assessing the pupils' achievement against the statements of attainment.
