Biology 11 - Viral Diseases: Project Description

Prescribed Learning Outcomes

Prescribed Learning Outcome E1

evaluate evidence used to classify viruses as living or non-living
  1. identify criteria for classifying organisms as living
  2. describe the basic structure of a virus, including the antigens, the membranous envelope, the protein capsid, and the nucleic acid core (DNA or RNA)
  3. identify the role of the host cell in viral reproduction
  4. compare the lytic and lysogenic cycles

Prescribed Learning Outcome E2

evaluate the effects of viruses on human health
  • define and give examples of viral specificity
  • describe the body’s basic lines of defence against a viral attack, including
            – primary line of defence (e.g., skin, mucous membranes, tears)
            – secondary line of defence (e.g., phagocytic white blood cells engulf viruses)
           – tertiary line of defence (e.g., white blood cells called lymphocytes produce antibodies)
  • give examples of ways to reduce the spread of viral diseases

Content to Include

VISUAL BITS
Viral Structure
  • Major components of your virus (see E1 #2 above)
  • Size of the virus
Viral Replication
  • Host(s) of the virus
  • Does it replicate through lytic or lysogenic cycle?
  • Transmission methods

CURIOSITY BITS
  • Include 5 points of information that don't fit in to the above
  • For example: well known historical figures that have had the disease
FACTUAL BITS
Historical Background
  • Scientific name of the virus (genus and species if possible)
  • Date the disease was first documented
  • Date the virus that caused the disease was discovered
  • Name of the scientist(s) that identified the virus
  • Country of origin (where was it first documented)
Dealing With
  • What are the symptoms?
  • Incubation period
  • Treatment
  • Prevention methods to avoid getting the disease
Statistics (try to gather Canadian data if possible)
  • Number of people affected by the disease (annual and total)
  • Mortality (death) rate of the disease

Display your knowledge in one of the following projects...

Project #1 - Model & Poster
  • Make a 3D model of the virus (cross-section with parts labelled)
  • Create a convincing 11 x 17 public health poster
Project #2 - Digital
  • Create a Weebly webpage to inform the public about the virus
  • Include a self-created video to warn the public about the virus
Project #3 - Cereal Box
  • Design a mock cereal product (should look as professional as possible)
  • Create a 30-45 second commercial to sell your product
